Following a record number of calls for help in 2023, the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) in Clare is actively recruiting new volunteers in the Ennis area.

Clare SVP will host an information meeting in the Temple Gate Hotel, Ennis at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday 9th of October for people interested in joining the Society.

Denis Carty, President Clare SVP said, “We are inviting members of the public to consider volunteering with the Society in Clare. Last year we received over 5000 requests for assistance from people experiencing poverty across our 14 branches in Clare. Our members directly assisted over 1500 different households will food, heating, fuels, electricity and education costs”.

He explained, “The goal of SVP is to support and empower economic independence, self-sufficiency, and personal self-worth, through friendship, support in times of need to people experiencing poverty. We also work for social justice and equity”.

SVP’s work is not possible without volunteers, Denis outlined. “Volunteer members are the cornerstone of SVP. Without them we could not do the work we do. We need new members to help us continue helping others in our community. We are looking for people from all walks of life who can spare about 4 to 5 hours a week to help families and individuals in need. All new volunteers will receive training and undergo garda vetting.

“There are many ways people can get involved with the society. Any person, who enjoys working with others and shares our values is welcome to contribute to our work. Volunteers generally join a branch, called a conference, normally a group of 8 to 12 people based in a local area”.

He explained that “visiting people in their homes is our core work. When people in need contact the Society, two volunteer members will call to their home. They get to know the people they visit, offering a listening ear as well as practical help and information. They work with people in a non-judgemental manner to try and resolve the difficulties they are experiencing. They may provide some help towards the costs of essential items such as food, fuel, clothing, household goods and utility bills. They may also provide help towards the cost of education for children and adults.”
