A Clare surfer has died following an accident on Monday morning.

An alarm was raised shortly after 8am when the man got into difficulty while surfing at Lough Donnell in Quilty.

In a statement, The Irish Coast Guard outlined, “The Shannon based Coast Guard helicopter R115 this morning transferred a man to University Hospital Limerick”. CPR was administered on scene and also en route to the hospital.

Members of the Kilkee unit of the Irish Coast Guard were at the scene along with An Garda Síochána.

Family members of the local surfer who is from Mid-Clare and also works as a lifeguard were contacted to come to UHL shortly after he was airlifted there.

He was pronounced dead at UHL shortly before lunchtime.
