A SWIMMING BAN has been introduced in Mountshannon.

It is the second area of Lough Derg in the county to be hit with a bathing prohibition notice this week after the red flag was erected at Ballycuggeran on Saturday.

Once again, the presence of algal bloom has led to the introduction of the bathing prohibition. This was issued by Clare County Council on Friday, on the advice of the HSE.

Blue green algae can produce harmful toxins. Such toxins have been known to be harmful to animals that drink the water and skin rashes have occurred in humans following contact.

In accordance with An Taisce’s Blue Flag programme, the Blue Flag at the bathing area will be removed until such time as the water quality improves.
