PLANS to extend both the public lighting and footpath approaching Carrigoran roundabout are to be included in an application for Active Travel funding.

An application is to be made for the next round of the National Transport Authorities Active Travel funding to include the footpath from Newmarket-on-Fergus to Carrigoran roundabout and also extend this towards the Bellsfort, senior executive engineer with the Shannon Municipal District, Tom Mellett confirmed. Improvement of public lighting is also included in the plans.

He acknowledged that the existing path “is popular with walkers and is a connection from the nursing home” to the village.

Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) requested at this month’s meeting of the Shannon MD to extend the public lighting, an appeal which was seconded by Cllr PJ Ryan (IND). “It is an area that people walk and cycle all year round,” McMahon outlined.

“People are walking and exercising now in different forms, from now until the end of March people need to be able to take advantage of public lighting and use it in a safe manner,” the Newmarket-on-Fergus representative added.
