RESIDENTS of a Kilrush estate are seeking the replacement of footpaths which have been in existence since 1973.

Original footpaths at Lower Shannon Heights in Kilrush have been in place since 1973 and are in need of an upgrade, residents have flagged.

In a petition accompanying a motion before the West Clare Municipal District by Cllr Gabriel Keating (FG), the residents stated, “Most of the residents are now advanced in years and find it very difficult to walk on stable ground not to mind footpaths that are cracked and broken”. Cllr Keating appealed to Clare County Council to replace the footpaths.

Clare County Council are currently undertaking “substantial footpath works” in Kilrush, senior executive engineer Alan Kennelly advised. “I note that some of the footpaths in Shannon Heights are in poor condition and Clare County Council will replace these bays. This is not a commitment to replace every footpath within the development, but to replace any defective bays,” he stated.

His reply was welcomed by Cllr Keating with Cllr Ian Lynch (IND) stressing that the “entire area” needed the footpaths replaced.
