BAREFIELD TIDY TOWNS are finding it difficult “and quite dangerous” to maintain the roundabout at Ballymaley.

Ennis Municipal District were called on by Cllr Ann Norton (IND) to look after the maintenance and grass cutting at Ballymaley roundabout.

Senior executive technician, Tommy Scottt explained, “The top of the roundabout is maintained as a Biodiversity meadow.  The crop will now be cut and removed. Grass cutting has finished for the season and will recommence in April”.

He added, “The grass cutting on the Ballymaley roundabout is carried out in a similar manner to the roundabouts n the N85 where the grass is permitted to grow and become a wild flower meadow in line with good biodiversity practices. This is part of the Tidy Town’s biodiversity programme”.

Speaking at the December meeting of the Ennis MD, Cllr Norton acknowledged the need to maintain the roundabout for biodiversity. She flagged that growth coming through the bricks of the roundabout is proving contentious for volunteers with Barefield Tidy Towns who “have been trying to maintain it, they just find it is quite dangerous”.

She suggested the Ennis Gardening Section would be better placed and possess more suitable equipment to deal with the matter.

Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) seconded the motion while Cllr Paul Murphy (FG) commented, “I know from cycling through the roundabout that the weeds come up through the bricks regularly”.
