SIXMILEBRIDGE’s main street “has been a contentious issue for many years” said county councillors in putting forward arguments to resurface the road.

Inclusion of Sixmilebridge’s main street in the 2022 roads programme for resurfacing was requested by Cllr John Crowe (FG) before a meeting of the Shannon Municipal District. On top of this, he wished to see traffic calming measures introduced.

He detailed that the road was highly traversed by pedestrians and motorists. “It is an active town with people using the footpath and walking”. The Cathaoirleach of the Shannon MD added, “I know the road has been done on the footpaths and slowing the traffic down. The speed of the traffic coming down the Barrack Hill and right to the junction with so many people walking in Sixmilebridge, kids walking to school and people shopping in the day, something needs to be done.

Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) seconded the proposal and remarked, “the surface of the main street in Sixmilebridge has been a contentious issue for many years. We need to do something with it. The traffic needs to be calmed, it is a downhill approach to the river”.

Tom Mellett, senior executive engineer in the Shannon MD informed the meeting that it was intended to include the main street in the 2022 schedule of works “subject to budget approval”.
