EMERGENCY vehicles are experiencing โ€œhuge issuesโ€ when trying to access a Shannon estate.

Appeals for the addition of extra parking spaces at Tradaree Court were issued to the Shannon Municipal District as local councillors raised the concerns of residents.

In a proposal before the Shannon MD, Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF) asked that more parking spaces be placed in the estate. โ€œResidents are concerned about emergency vehicles gaining access due to cars having to park on the street,โ€ she stated.

Senior executive engineer, Tom Mellett acknowledged that the potential to find additional parking capacity in Tradaree was โ€œlimitedโ€. The general area will be assessed to seek a solution, he confirmed.

Mellett utlined, โ€œhouses are served by a large number of off street parking in the main. It is acknowledged that for convenience and necessity some residents park immediately outside their property on the public road and is at these locations where space is most limitedโ€.

There are more cars in the estate now than when it was built five decades ago, Cllr McGettigan flagged. โ€œThese houses were built years ago when there was only one car per family. I would have concerns about emergency vehicles gaining access to those areas if it came down to itโ€.

โ€œWeโ€™ve a huge issue with emergency vehicles accessing that area with the volume of residents in the area,โ€ Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) cautioned. He added, โ€œAdditional car parking is crucial, people have no other option but to park between these obstacles on the roadโ€.
