Creation of a flexible retirement and pension plan can incentivise members of the Irish public to work longer, a Clare councillor has said.

In a recent proposal before the local authority, Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) requested that the Government “devise a flexible retirement or pension plan which will incentivise employers and facilitate employees who wish to continue to work full time or part time”.

Cllr McMahon detailed survey findings which showed that 24 percent of the public kept working past retirement age for financial reasons, “others did it to keep their mind active and to maintain social interaction”.

“It is to reflect growing old, people are living longer, 81 has been compared with 69. An awful lot of people want to live and work longer,” the Newmarket-on-Fergus native added. His proposal was seconded by Cllr John Crowe (FG).
