Coastal erosion has prompted the need for upgrades to culverts at two beaches in West Clare

In July, Clare County Council gave notice that they intend to carry out the reinstatement of a 1,500mm concrete surface water drainage culvert from Lough Donnell in Doonbeg and Clohaninchy beach in Quilty for a distance of 45m to the sea and all ancillary site works associated with this reinstatement.

Alan Kennelly, senior executive engineer in the West Clare Municipal District confirmed “in accordance with the Habitats Directive, appropriate assessment screening has been carried out and has determined that a full appropriate assessment is not required in respect of the project”.

He added, “An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) screening determination has been made and concludes that there is no real likelihood of significant effects on the environment arising from the proposed development”. The Part VIII process is ongoing for the development.

An update at the plans was requested by Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) at a recent sitting of the West Clare Municipal District. He felt Seafield also needed to be considered. “Coastal erosion has pushed back the beach line, there are stones thrown over the culvert during storms which is blocking it up and flooding the catchment,” Murphy stated.
