The golf season may be winding down but big numbers are still the order of the day as golfer of the year titles are still up for grabs in a number of clubs which is ensuring big entries for the competitions still to be completed.
Full timesheets are again expected this week despite the fact that the Ryder cup between Europe and the US is certain to attract huge television audiences on Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Shannon Golf Club:
Denis McCarthy was the winner of the past captain’s prize at Shannon Golf Club.
Kilrush Golf Club:
The Talty Stores open singles at Kilrush at the weekend was won by Bernard Coleman (18) with 41 points from Michael D. Kelly (22) with a similar score. Gearoid Williams (13) was third and he also returned 41 points while Pat Murtagh (18) was fourth with 40 points.
The category winners were Brian Scanlan (12) with 40 points, Derek Garvey (15) with 38 points and Tom Cleary (21) with 39 points.
Jim Kelly (22) won the Paddy Burns men’s singles competition with 36 points from Aeneas O’Connor (19) with a similar score. Henry A Cahill (20) was third, also with 36 points.
In the Paddy Burns ladies singles Mary Bolton (21) was the winner with 40 point from Margaret Donnelly (19) with 35 points and Mary G. Nilan (21), also with 35 points.
The ladies 18 hole stroke competition, sponsored by Ryan’s Deli, was won by Anne Cooper (36) with 67 from Anne Brennan (12) with 70. Ann Marie Donnellan won the gross with 88 while the 12 hole winner was Ann McMahon.
Woodstock Golf Club:
Last week’s open singles at Woodstock was won by Tom Dormer (21) with 43 points. He had two to spare over Aaron Lavery (30) with third spot filled by Joe Colleran (24) with 40 points The gross was won by Brian Aherne (7) with 34 points.
In the ESB club championship the winner was Tony Neville (15) with 67 nett from Gerry Hayes (16) with 68. Aidan Mulcahy (10) was third with 69 followed by Brian Michael Foudy (15) with 69 and Niall Reynolds (12) with 69. Cathal O’Connor (2) won the gross with 71.
Last week’s seniors outing was held in Shannon where the winners of the 15 hole scramble were Frank McEnery, Tommy Sheedy Tom Dormer and club president Matt Power with 47.5.
The competition this weekend will be the September medal and this is the last golfer of the year event before the Masters. The top 30 players and ties will qualify for the Masters which will be played the weekend after the September medal. The mid week open singles has concluded for the season.
Dromoland Golf Club:
George Smith won the Friday open singles at Dromoland with 41 points from Alan Neville with 40 and Michael Cooney with 39. Michael Crowley won the gross with 34 points.
The weekly 9 hole competition was won by Seamus Lawlor with 21 points from John Earls with 19 and Robin Mounsey with 19.
In the Wednesday 18 hole stableford competition, Nicky Duggan was the winner with 41 points from Cillian O’Connor with 40 and David O’Brien, also with 40. The 18 and over category was won by Ed Crowe while Ross O’Flaherty won the gross with 35 points.
The ladies Eye Candy mixed rumble was won by Mark Reynolds and Kelly McClean with 52 points from John Hayes and Anne Nix with 48 with Niall and Joan Dunne in third place and they also had 48 points. In the 7th hole draw, John Casey was the winner.
Kelly McClean was the winner of the ladies 9 hole competitionwith 19 points.
Ennis Golf Club:
The 18 hole Cancer Alliance fundraiser at Ennis was won by Mary Lenihan (17) with 38 points from Noreen Courtney (27) with 35 points with Carmel Verling (23) in third spot with 33 points.
Mary Woulfe (15) won the 9 hole stableford competition with 19 points from Mary Nagle (13) with 18 points with third spot filled by Bridie Keane (17), also with 17 points.
Sinead O’Sullivan (27) won the 9 hole improvers competition with 42
Ennis retained the Auburn Lodge Trophy in Lahinch last week, The best of the club’s cards were returned by Nuala d’Auria, Ethna Murphy and Eileen T. Corry. The overall winner of the singles’ competition was Nuala d’Auria with 44 points.
