Clare have drawn Wexford in the first round of the 2021 All-Ireland Hurling Senior Championship qualifiers, one year on since the Banner sunk the Yellowbellies’ by seven points.

The draw took place this morning live on the RTÉ Radio 1’s Morning Ireland. Brian Lohan’s men will meet  Davy Fitzgerald’s Wexford this weekend, with a time and venue to be decided later today.

Clare will be looking to bounce back after a controversial defeat to Tipperary in the Munster SHC, where an Aidan McCarthy challenge on Jake Morris resulted in a contentious penalty that allowed Tipp to outscore Clare 2-04 to 2 points during a sinbin period.

Clare’s most capped championship player Davy Fitzgerald will be looking to get the better of the intercounty team that led him to two All-Ireland’s and three All Star Awards as player along with one title as manager in 2013. Last year, Clare beat Wexford 1-21 to 17 points in the second round of the championship at O’ Moore’s Park in Portlaoise.

Wexford also bowed out at the semi-final stage in Leinster this year, losing out to Kilkenny, with a late Walter Walsh goal in extra-time at Croke park securing a place in the final against Dublin.

Waterford will face Laois in the other game of the first round, whilst Cork and Galway have received byes into Round 2.
