Failure to complete remedial work at “one of the most dangerous pieces of road in Meelick” will heighten the potential for more traffic accidents in South Clare, elected representatives have warned.

Poor surface was cited by Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) as he put forward a request for repairs and surfacing work to be completed on the section of road between Nix’s Bridge and Mount Gordon in Meelick.

Any repairs required will be scheduled pending an investigation by staff within the Shannon Municipal District, senior executive engineer Tom Mellett responded.

Some repairs had been completed to a wall in the area, Cllr Ryan acknowledged. “The surface is very poor there and I think if there isn’t remedial work done, the road will totally deteriorate,” he highlighted.

Cllr Pat O’Gorman (FF) backed the need for works to take place. “This particular stretch of road is one of the most dangerous pieces of road in Meelick”. He outlined that when the river flows after a period of heavy rain, it brings both silt and sand onto the road. “The wall had to be built because cars would fall into the field,” he added.
