Hopes for the finishing of a footpath opposite Hamilton Park in Kilkishen have hit a stumbling block.

Senior executive engineer in the Killaloe Municipal District issued a note of caution at a recent meeting that the allocation for works in 2021 to footpaths “has been significantly reduced”.

Her comments came in response to a request from Cllr Alan O’Callaghan (FF) that the local authority “finish the footpath across from the GAA field in Kilkishen in the interests of safety”. The proposal was seconded by Cllr Tony O’Brien (FF).

Madden highlighted that the referenced footpath was “currently a gravel footpath and should funding become available throughout the year, the Killaloe Municipal District will consider surfacing this pathway”.

Cllr O’Callaghan acknowledged that the €160k allocation from the IPB, which provides insurance cover to local authorities and other public bodies “won’t last long if we’re all going on about footpaths”.

Putting blacktop on the footpath “would be nice,” the Kilmurry publican stated. He said the footpath in question was not too wide and “a couple of thousand” euro would be sufficient to complete the job.

“When I pass regularly you can see it needs to be done. It won’t take huge funding, a small bit will finish it off,” he added.
