Recent improvement works in Newmarket-on-Fergus have been welcomed locally as โ€œwonderfulโ€ while further plans for The Fair Green in the village are to be carried out this year.

Surfacing and the clearing of footpaths towards Dromoland Castle have coincided with increased walkers on the old Limerick to Ennis road in Newmarket-on-Fergus. A driver feedback sign has also been installed on approach to Scoil na Maighdine Mhuire and Newmarket Celtic from the Ennis direction.

โ€œThere is wonderful work going on,โ€ Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) remarked of the actions of Clare County Council staff. He detailed that the improvements were carried out โ€œafter five motions over many yearsโ€ and believed โ€œmotions do workโ€.

Preparation of a public lighting design plan โ€œwith full specificationsโ€ for the Fair Green in Newmarket-on-Fergus was sought by Cllr McMahon โ€œas a matter of urgencyโ€ at the March meeting of the Shannon Municipal District. His proposal was seconded by Cllr John Crowe (FG).

Senior executive engineer, Tom Mellett responded, โ€œAn initial inspection of the carpark has indicated that one additional light standard to the front of the car park along with an upgrade of the four existing light standards would provide adequate lighting for the areaโ€.

He confirmed that resurfacing of the rear carpark on the Ballycar side of the church would be completed this year following requests from McMahon and will incorporate lighting for the area.

Activities of the residents in the locality of the Fair Green and also Tidy Towns volunteers were lauded by Cllr McMahon for their efforts associated with the upkeep of the area. โ€œUp to ten or twelve years ago there was no green area although it was called The Green. It is a meeting place for tourists and locals to go about their business and a meeting point for history groups. People are meeting there in a positive fashion,โ€ the Cathaoirleach of the Shannon MD added.
