Passing bays are intended to be improved along a Broadford road that has been “in bad condition for a number of years”.

Consideration will be given to the merits of including the L7000 road in Broadford in the 2021 schedule of works in the Killaloe Municipal District, officials within Clare County Council have confirmed.

An appeal to include the road in the programme and the need for passing bays was issued by Cllr Joe Cooney (FG) at the January meeting of the Killaloe MD. “The road is in a very bad condition and is in need of passing bays in the interest of road safety. His motion was seconded by Cllr Pat Hayes (FF).

There will be an inspection of the route in the coming weeks, senior executive engineer Niamh Madden confirmed. “A number of passing bays are already in existence on this road and the Municipal District will look to improve these passing bays in 2021,” she responded.

Attempts to include the road included on schemes have been regularly made over recent years none of which have materialised, Cllr Cooney recalled. “The road has been in a bad condition for a number of years,” he reiterated. “It is important that it is brought to a proper standard,” the O’Callaghans Mills representative stated.

He praised the newly appointed senior executive engineer for travelling the road to get a better understanding. “She did say there is existing passing bays but more of them will need to be put on the road and there is room for more, they are in a very bad state”.
