Cratloe woman Mary Slattery has been named as the Clare Older People’s Volunteer of the Year for 2020.

An active member of the community for over 48 years, Mary is currently part of the Cratloe Community Council. She was praised for her regular attendance at meetings and working to improve the life of the South Clare community.

Since 1967, Mary has been a member of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA) holding a whole host of roles. She has provided catering for events, organised by groups such as the GAA, the Church and the annual Milford Hospice fundraiser as well as serving as a Eucharistic Minister.

Mary is noted for bringing older people to Ennis for hospital appointments and visits their homes to help organise medication which she collects from pharmacies if required. During the Covid-19 restrictions she has collected groceries and medication for people.

At an awards ceremony streamed live on YouTube via Áras Contae an Chláir on Tuesday, keynote speaker, Dr Harry Barry spoke about resilience plus recognising and dealing with stress. He also gave tips on how to improve mental wellbeing. The function was hosted by the Clare Older People’s Council and supported by Clare County Council.

Nineteen community volunteers from all over Clare were nominated for this year’s award. Pat Dowling, Chief Executive of Clare County Council, virtually presented Mary Slattery with an engraved glass trophy as well as a Clare Gift Card. All nominees will also receive a framed letter from President Michael D Higgins, which was read out during the ceremony. Mayor of Clare, Cllr Mary Howard (FG) highlighted the importance of voluntary work to local communities at the function.
