Calls to prepare a masterplan for Doonbeg Pier to maximise the potential of the site have been voiced by a West Clare councillor.

Clare County Council were requested by Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) to deliver a masterplan for Doonbeg Pier “to ensure best use is made of the potential of this amenity for locals and visitors alike”. Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) seconded the proposal.

Responding to the motion at a meeting of the West Clare Municipal District, senior executive engineer Alan Kennelly said it would be best placed to forward the request to officials in the rural development and tourism sections of the local authority given it involved the preparation of a long-term plan.

Stressing the importance of coherent plans and strategies for towns and villages, Cllr Murphy described Doonbeg Pier as “an amazing asset”. He outlined, “It is being minded and developed by a community group.

“This is an opportunity for us as a Council to look and see how we can make it a better thing. We’ve a lot of coast and a lot of small piers, we need to make sure the asset delivers for the village itself”. The Kilkee representative said that at present a coherent approach was lacking with “people parking all over the place”.

Acting senior executive officer, John O’Malley acknowledged, “It is important that we have a full picture”.
