East Clare councillors have appealed to the local authority to install street lighting at two sections of road approaching Quin village.

Citing โ€œthe interests of safety,โ€ Cllr Alan Oโ€™Callaghan (FF) put forward a motion to a recent meeting of the Killaloe Municipal District for street lighting to be erected on the R469 and L-3150 from the 50km/h speed limit in Quin village.

Upgraded line marking will be completed โ€œas an interim measure,โ€ senior executive engineer Tom Mellett stated. The speed limit extends โ€œapproximately 350m beyond the junction on the R469 and 350m on the L-3150 from the junction. These sections have become built up over the years and would benefit from a number of measures including public lighting, footpaths, enhanced road markings and signage,โ€ he added.

He cautioned that the extent of the works requested by the Kilmurry representative required โ€œresources beyondโ€ the budget available to the Killaloe MD. Mellett suggested that it would be best incorporated into a town and village renewal scheme.

Oโ€™Callaghan highlighted that a number of houses in the vicinity of Malachyโ€™s Bar have a lack of public lighting along the approach road to their homes. โ€œThe village is very dark, I donโ€™t want to say neglected but from that side of the road the footpaths are poor and infrastructure isnโ€™t the best,โ€ he remarked.

Benefiting from a town and village renewal scheme would be a huge benefit to Quin, Cllr Pat Burke (FG) felt โ€œbecause of the vibrancy of the villageโ€. He continued, โ€œPopulation wise it has exploded in the last couple of years. Major funding will hopefully be got for the village of Quinโ€.
