Clare cyclist, Ella Doherty screamed with delight on Sunday morning as she won the Irish Junior Cycling Road Championships.

Hosted by Newcastle West Wheelers, Ella was first home in the Junior (16-18) category with the Clarecastle rider taking victory in the sprint. A 60km circuit, the race consisted of three 20km laps and was held in Knockaderry.

Of Greenmount Cycling Academy, she held off Caoimhe O’Brien (Weston Expert Homes/Torelli/Assure) and Ellia Tutty (Dungarvan CC) who took silver and bronze respectively to taste a memorable victory.

Reacting to the victory, Ella said, “We were coming up the hill at the end and we were together. I am not a sprinter but I just put the head down, I just told myself “I can do this”.

“I’m so, so delighted, thanks to my coaches, they were just so supportive for the whole year. I really can’t believe it,” the delighted Doherty added.
