Heavy rainfall has led to a temporary prohibition on swimming at four Clare beaches.

A swimming ban is now in place at Lahinch, Spanish Point, Kilkee and White Strand Miltown Malbay once again. It had been lifted on Tuesday but has returned following heavy rainfall which has led to increased levels of bacteria in the water due to the run-off from the catchment area.

Clare County Council have implemented the ban on the advice of the HSE following testing in the past 24 hours.

On Wednesday morning in Kilkee, the Victorian Stream flooded and over-topped with locals predicting that a ban would be returning to the coastal location.

Testing will be conducted in the coming days but the prohibition remains in place until further notice.

The Victoria stream dammed for the protection of the beach, backed up and flooded and then overtopped in Kilkee due to extreme rain this morning.
