A fatality is looming on a South Clare road, one elected member of Clare County Council has warned.

Safety measures have been sought on the L3102 from Cratloe Cross to Flanneryโ€™s Cross by Cllr John Crowe (FG) at a recent meeting of the Shannon Municipal District.

An examination of the request is due to be carried out by members of the local authorityโ€™s road staff. Senior engineer, Aidan Oโ€™Rourke had flagged that the roadway โ€œterminates within the boundary of the motorway maintenance scheme and if necessary the operator will be contacted to review this junctionโ€.

Cllr Crowe outlined that โ€œthe very end of the motorwayโ€ at Flanneryโ€™s Cross โ€œis extremely dangerousโ€ with a high amount of traffic going at a very fast pace. Motorists are left blind on the Bunratty side of the road he stated and believed safety measures were required. โ€œIt is better to try get it done now before we have a fatalityโ€.

โ€œAt Tommy Flanneryโ€™s cross when youโ€™re coming onto dual-carriageway youโ€™re coming on from a starting stop,โ€ Cllr Pat Oโ€™Gorman (FF) highlighted. He suggested a filter road parallel to the dual-carriageway to give drivers time to get out on the road and gain some momentum. Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) replied, โ€œThe only way of solving it is to extend the hard shoulder at both sides of the cross, that is the only solution.
