A fatality is looming on a South Clare road, one elected member of Clare County Council has warned.

Safety measures have been sought on the L3102 from Cratloe Cross to Flannery’s Cross by Cllr John Crowe (FG) at a recent meeting of the Shannon Municipal District.

An examination of the request is due to be carried out by members of the local authority’s road staff. Senior engineer, Aidan O’Rourke had flagged that the roadway “terminates within the boundary of the motorway maintenance scheme and if necessary the operator will be contacted to review this junction”.

Cllr Crowe outlined that “the very end of the motorway” at Flannery’s Cross “is extremely dangerous” with a high amount of traffic going at a very fast pace. Motorists are left blind on the Bunratty side of the road he stated and believed safety measures were required. “It is better to try get it done now before we have a fatality”.

“At Tommy Flannery’s cross when you’re coming onto dual-carriageway you’re coming on from a starting stop,” Cllr Pat O’Gorman (FF) highlighted. He suggested a filter road parallel to the dual-carriageway to give drivers time to get out on the road and gain some momentum. Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) replied, “The only way of solving it is to extend the hard shoulder at both sides of the cross, that is the only solution.
