Last week I talked about my new and improved morning routine, I was mainly pointing out how starting your day can really interpret how you finish it, this week I’m focusing on a night-time routine.

In the evenings it’s all about winding down for me. How I treat myself before I go to bed can distinguish my night’s sleep a lot. I always aim to do some self care in the evening time before bed. That includes skincare and meditation. Taking time for yourself is essential at the end of every day. Step by step I’m going to talk about how I spend my evenings before bed. I want this to inspire you to put yourself first. Maybe if you’re struggling to sleep this might motivate you to tackle the issue.

Step 1:
First I always get into comfy clothing. Like a lot of people, getting into your pyjamas is such a nice feeling. I particularly love silk pyjamas because personally I think they are so comfortable and make you feel that bit luxurious. My body automatically feels better when I change.

Step 2:
Next I proceed with my skincare routine. I cannot go a night without cleansing my skin and applying my favourite creams. My skin feels amazing when I use the right products and I feel good knowing my skin is getting what it needs. After this I always spray my pillows with Elysium Sleep Well pillow spray in scent Lavender. You can purchase this in your local health shop.

Step 3:
Occasionally I would journal in the evening if I feel like I need to put pen to paper. If I really need to let something out psychologically I always try my best to journal. This is such a hard task for many in terms of keeping in touch with your feelings. But once you incorporate this into you everyday routine in some way, shape or form, this can really help you. Even writing two words is still something. You will always feel better after doing so.

Step 4:
Afterwards I read a book for about 40 minutes to an hour. This always help me wind down and relaxes me. I personally believe reading is my therapy and it really helps me be imaginative. The current book I’m reading is by Cecelia Ahern ‘One Hundred Names’. I will be back with my review soon but I am really enjoying it so far. I bought it in my local Easons in Shannon.

Step 5:
Straight after reading I do some meditation. I would usually meditate for about 10 minutes at night depending on how tired I am. I find myself falling asleep quickly from this. It really helps me clear my head. I always listen to meditation music on Spotify.

I always try my best to stick to this routine so I can improve my sleeping pattern and mood. I recommend you try a routine tailored to your needs and see how much this improves you as a person. Let’s end this column with a very fitting quote “Invest in rest”.
