Ex Chief Superintendent of the Clare Garda Division, Michael Gubbins has been appointed as the Chief Bureau Officer of the Criminal Assets Bureau.

Kilmallock native, Gubbins took charge of the position with immediate effect this week. The move has resulted following the promotion of Acting Assistant Commissioner Patrick Clavin.

During his brief three-month stint as Chief Supt in Clare, Michael led Clare’s biggest Garda operation in fifteen years, that being Donald Trump’s first Presidential visit to Ireland.

He was previously Head of the Garda Cyber Crime Bureau.

CAB’s budget for 2020 has been increased to €9.1m. The Bureau’s remit is to target a person’s assets, wherever situated, which derive, or are suspected to derive, directly or indirectly, from criminal conduct. Since its inception, the Bureau has fought organised crime in this jurisdiction and disrupted the activities of criminal gangs by depriving them of ill-gotten assets.

Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan (FG) has welcomed the appointment of Mr Gubbins. “The leadership of this multi-agency body is critical. I know that Chief Superintendent Gubbins will bring extensive skill and experience to the position, including his time heading the National Cyber Crime Bureau, in order to ensure there is no let-up in CAB’s activities targeting assets which have been derived from criminal conduct.”

Flanagan acknowledged that it was period “of significant change and reform” within An Garda Síochána.

Kilmurry McMahon native, Anne Marie McMahon is currently Acting Deputy Commissioner of An Garda Síochána.
