A revised date has been set for the start of the 2020 Leaving Certificate.

Minister for Education, Joe McHugh (FG) confirmed in the Dàil on Thursday evening that the Leaving Cert will begin on July 29th.

A timetable will be issued to students on June 1st, days before they were originally due to sit the State Examinations.

Such a timeframe would be sufficient to allow for public health advice to be given and plans be put in place, the Minister said.

Payment for the exams has been deferred until they have been held.

A working group was factoring all eventualities, McHugh stated when asked what was the Department’s Plan B. “We won’t go into this in a blinkered way. We are living in the real world”.

Frustration has been voiced by students across the country over the uncertainty that has surrounded the tests.
