Ennis Lions Club have made a €1000 donation as part of a national effort to purchase 200,000 face visors that will front-line staff.

Lions Clubs across the country are attempting to raise €100,000 that will allow them to acquire 200,000 visors that will be distributed free of charge to HSE and An Garda Síochána personnel in the Republic of Ireland and NHS and PSNI staff in Northern Ireland.

James O’Sullivan of Macroom Lions Club initiated the venture which was then supported by nine other clubs in the zone and subsequently has received the backing of Lions Clubs District 133 which covers the entire island of Ireland.

All clubs were contacted a week and a half ago and asked to contribute €1000, a total of €20,000 has been earned to date. The full-face visor is a vital piece of personal protective equipment (PPE). They are purchasing them from Irish based, Hero Shield, a group of companies who have come together to manufacture the product on a not for profit basis. “The HSE has already noted that, as the visor has no moving parts, it is easier to sterilise and reuse than many existing solutions,” a spokesperson pointed out.

President of Ennis Lions Club, Michael Neylon confirmed to The Clare Echo they have forwarded their requested donation of €1000, “If we can collect more, we will do that”. He liaised with local members as soon as receiving correspondence, due to current regulations such communication was done digitally on WhatsApp as opposed to holding a club meeting.

“We are fully supportive of it and we are very glad that we can be of assistance. A lot of our volunteers and members are cocooning and the rest are self-isolating, this is something we can do from the comfort of our own home,” the Ballyea man told The Clare Echo.

Money given by Ennis Lions Club had previously been earmarked for another purpose. They are also keen to raise more funds for the efforts. As the Lions Club are unable to hold fundraisers at present, they have encouraged individuals that are in a position to donate to do so.
