Clare TD, Violet-Anne Wynne (SF) has apologised for how she engaged with constituents online on Friday.

As reported by The Clare Echo on Thursday, both Violet-Anne and Michael McNamara (IND) requested further clarity on Ireland’s testing centres during COVID-19. On Friday, she spoke with Clare FM and following the publication of the story, the Offaly native engaged in the comments section of the local radio station’s Facebook Page.

“I am working all day, what are you doing to help,” Wynne said in response to one question from a constituent as to her involvement during the crisis. “Poor pet” was how she later referred to the man who posed this question.

When a Scariff native commented, “When you do decide to do some work done forget there are two sides to the county” to which the Kilrush resident pointed out that she helped an individual secure housing in Tulla.

Further quotes such as calling former Clare TDs Pat Breen (FG) “Prat Breen” and Timmy Dooley (FF) “Timmy do nothing” annoyed voters with some posting underneath that they had voted for Sinn Féin in February’s General Election but that they believed the comments were not befitting of a sitting TD.

A spokesperson for North & West Clare Sinn Féin criticised the online antics of the party’s only TD in the county. “A prime example why the party’s social media guidelines should be followed at all times on social media platforms”.

Several constituents also praised Ms Wynne for raising the issue of the testing backlog.

On Saturday, Violet-Anne issued a public apology for her online comments. “I understand that a number of remarks I made on Facebook recently have caused offence. I want to apologise for this and to those involved”.
