Road signs that have turned green are to be cleaned following requests from elected representatives.
Maintenance works and cleaning of all road signs in Clare will be carried out in the near future. The topic was brought to the attention of Clare County Council at a recent meeting by Cllr John Crowe (FG) who appealed for the works to be carried out.
“An awful lot of our signs are in need of an upgrade especially when we’re selling our county as a tourist destination,” Cllr Crowe stated. He suggested the approach of each Municipal District taking care of their own signs by replacing those that are broken and cleaning those which are dirty.
Tourism was stressed by Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) as a key reason to complete the works. “It is very important for our tourist trail that our signs are looking well”. The seconder of the motion agreed that using “a dedicated team in each Municipal District” would lead to more efficiency on the matter. “A lot of our signs have turned green, it is something that needs to be looked after”.
Misspelled placenames on signs was another frustration voiced at the meeting. “In order to know where you come from you need to know where you’re going, that is hard to do because the signs are so hard to read,” Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) commented. He added, “It annoys the hell out of me to see E used in Lahinch when it should be an A”.
One week where the Council solely focuses on road signs was suggested by Cllr Joe Cooney (FG). “There should be one week dedicated to cleaning signs like Heritage Week or Biodiversity week”.
Council Chief Executive, Pat Dowling admitted it was “regrettable” some of the County’s signs were in poor order. “It is about the condition of the ditch in most cases”. He praised Cllr Crowe for “a good proposal”.
