Old and new members attended the AGM of Shannon Tidy Towns earlier this month where the town’s most successful outcome in the Tidy Towns competition was celebrated.

Long-serving volunteer, Derek Clune who was awarded the Clare Older People’s Volunteer of the Year in 2019 continues in the role of Secretary. Siobhan Mulderring was elected Chairperson with Garret McPhillips, Theresa Hogan, Dawn Adams and Noel Mulderring appointed Vice Chairperson, Assistant Secretary, PRO and Treasurer respectively.

After many years of service, Olive Bowen, Joe Hogan and Mary Carew bowed out of their positions as PRO, Chairperson and Treasurer. The trio were thanked for their contribution to the town with members voicing their delight that all three would remain on as volunteers.

Projects completed in 2019 such as the revamp of large flower beds in Shannon, repainting and fixing of bus shelters, installation of hanging baskets along the main road, planting of hundreds of daffodils along the same stretch, the addition of two new picnic benches along the River Walk plus the Shannon River Walk Fun Day were all positively reviewed at the AGM.

An eight percent increase in the National Tidy Towns Competition brought Shannon its best ever result in the competition. Volunteers unsurprisingly were in agreement that this was the highlight of the year gone by.
