“A greater balance” of GAA venues hosting games in West Clare is needed, clubs in the county have stated.

Kilrush Shamrocks highlighted at County Convention some venues “are chosen more than others” when it comes to hosting big encounters in West Clare. They called for the introduction of a quota system “when venues for senior and intermediate football championships are decided”.

Construction of a stand was completed at Captain Tubridy Memorial Park in Kilrush in 2016 with the primary aim of being able to accommodate spectators. Since then, the venue has not regularly hosted knockout games in either the Clare SFC or Clare IFC.

“There is a serious imbalance in how the venues for games are decided,” David O’Shea outlined. He detailed that there were “five or six excellent venues in West Clare” but that “some are chosen far more than others”. Killimer seconded the motion.

County secretary, Pat Fitzgerald expressed his agreement regarding the quality of facilities on offer in West Clare. He highlighted that once the CCC is appointed “we cannot interfere with their right to fix games”.

Fitzgerald added, “There should be a balance” and O’Shea interjected, “That’s what I’ve brought it forward”. The Kilrush secretary was then advised to bring the matter back before a meeting of the County Board.
