Ennis is one of the top ten cleanest towns in Ireland.

Business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL)’s final litter survey of 2019 pits Ennis in eight position in a ranking of forty towns and cities. Last year, Ennis finished in twenty second place while 2017 saw it named as the cleanest town in Ireland. For a record fourth time, Kilkenny topped the rankings and was followed by Killarney and Swords.

No heavily littered sites were noted in An Taisce’s report of the Clare county town. Historical and informative signs at the Daniel O’Connell monument, Mill Bridge and Market Place left the right impression. Collaboration with the Tidy Towns including façade painting along O’Connell St and tree planting at Tim Smythe Park was also acknowledged.

Some of the top ranking sites in Ennis included O’Connell Street “exceptionally clean and well presented”, Tim Smythe Park “an excellent site in terms of presentation, maintenance and litter” and Lower Market Street / Market Place.

Twenty one of the twenty seven inspected towns were deemed clean, a dip on previous years. Galway edged out Waterford to claim cleanest city as it enters its year as European City of Culture. The city areas of Galvone in Limerick, Ballymun in Dublin and Cork Northside were ‘littered’, with Dublin North Inner City at the foot of the rankings.
