Ennis councillors have requested that large boulders be removed from the environs of Ballyalla Lake.

Recognised as a wetland of international importance, Ballyalla Lake is often referred to at meetings of the Ennis Municipal District by councillors as an area with untapped potential. At its December sitting, Cllr Pat Daly (FF) requested the MD “to remove the large rocks adjacent” to the Lake.

“They have served their purpose, they have been there for many years,” Daly stated as he notified the meeting a farmer was willing to take the rocks.

Costs are being sought by the Ennis MD, senior executive engineer Eamon O’Dea outlined. “Not every truck will have appropriate tipper body to carry the boulders. The means of funding this work will be required once the cost estimates are available”.

Cllr Ann Norton (IND) commented, “Obviously they are there for a reason, we don’t want unexpected guests in around Ballyalla”. The Barefield representative continued, “Unfortunately the boulders are unsightly, if there was an opportunity to remove them it would be great”. Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) also added his support to the motion.

As he stressed the need for costings, O’Dea cautioned, “You could end up with something that seems to be an inauspicious bit of work that ends up €10,000, have to price it and that’s what we’re doing”.
