Shannon Airport’s financial structure needs to be reviewed, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has outlined to The Clare Echo.
Speaking to The Clare Echo during a recent visit to the county, the Cork native questioned if Shannon separating from the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) was the right move. In December 2012, Enda Kenny’s Fine Gael led Government confirmed its decision to split Shannon Airport from the (DAA) and place it in a new State-owned entity in what became Shannon Group.

If successful in the next General Election which he was confident would be held in the Spring of 2020, the first step Martin would make regarding Shannon Airport would be to “consult everyone in the region”.

“We need to strategically look at the financial structure underpinning Shannon, has it the capacity to deliver what it needs to deliver for the region. The Government is saying it can’t fund it, a lot of capital money went in last year totally by the Airport and that is problematic, there are issues on whether it was the right thing to separate at the time. That needs to be revaluated but in the short term, marketing support is required and some supports around infrastructure”.
