Cratloe’s Cathal Crosbie is currently contesting his first major championship for Ireland which are taking place in Sweden.

On Saturday morning, Cathal will run in the European U23 Championships 4x400m relay qualifiers which are pencilled in to start at 10:20. Just last month, the Ennis Track sprinter recorded his personal best 400m outdoor time (47.41) at Bedford.

He had to settle for a fifth place finish on Thursday as part of the individual 400m and so missed out on qualification. Speaking following this race, the former St Caimins Community School student was confident the experience would stand to him. “The first 200 felt good, don’t really know what happened after that, it was a bit of a blur, everyone started coming up on top of me.

“I’m a small bit disappointed, first major championship outside of Ireland, an absolute honour to do it. A lot of experience gained from this race, I know what I need to work on, I’m only 19, I’ve a lot of years ahead of me and more championships, on to the next one”.

He added, “The people around just destroyed me on the last 100, more experience, more strength some of the things I’m missing, I’m in great shape and I felt the race could have been ran better by me but it is what it is”.
