An absence of signs directing motorists to Miltown Malbay has been done deliberately to โ€˜write the West Clare town off the mapโ€™.

Speaking at the March meeting of the West Clare Municipal District, Cllr Christy Curtin criticised the TII for their part in ensuring Miltown doesnโ€™t cross the radar of first time visitors to the county. The Independent councillor reiterated his appeal for โ€œroad direction signs for Miltown Malbay be restoredโ€ at 7 different locations across the county.

These were; Maid of Erin Junction Ennis, Blakeโ€™s Corner, Killimer Car Ferry (N67), Fahy Rd Kilrush (N67-R483), Miltown Rd Kilkee (N67), Craggnock Cross (N67-L162280) and Cloonadrum Cross (N67-R483).

In response, the Districtโ€™s acting senior executive engineers Morgan Lahiffe and John Oโ€™Malley noted, โ€œThe National Road Signposting scheme was rolled out by the TII a number of years back. The signposting requirements for the national routes were specifically designed on that occasion. Clare County Council will raise these specific locations with the TII and request a response in this regardโ€.

โ€œThis has been specifically designed to write Miltown off the map,โ€ Cllr Curtin remarked of his native townโ€™s absence from signs at the 7 listed locations. โ€œThere is no rationale behind it, Miltown Malbay should be clearly signpostedโ€.

Cathaoirleach of the West Clare MD, Cllr Ian Lynch seconded the motion and questioned John Leahy, the Councilโ€™s senior engineer of the roads and transportation department if there was any explanation for Miltownโ€™s absence from signposts. Leahy admitted there was no reason for its omission and added, โ€œChristy has flagged it and we will follow up on itโ€.
