WORLD Number 1 golfer Justin Rose has pencilled the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open 2019 into his calendar, according to sources close to Lahinch Golf Club.

Following the disappointing news that Ulsterman Rory McIlroy will skip the event which is being held in Co Clare for the first time, the addition of US-based Rose would come as a massive boost to organisers in Lahinch.

Marquee names including Ryder Cup star Tommy Fleetwood have already confirmed their intentions to attend the Paul McGinley-hosted event, and it’s understood that Brit Justin Rose will also be joined by Lee Westwood and former world number 1, Spaniard Jon Rahm on the growing list of names who will set foot on the historic Old Course this July.

While an official announcement has yet to be made, it’s hoped that one will be imminent once all details are finalised.

A Lahinch Golf Club source told The Clare Echo, “I have it on good authority – it’s as good as confirmed that Justin Rose will play in Lahinch this July. To have the best player in the world on current form commit to Lahinch is testament to the organisers and of course the Lahinch facility itself. As a member, I’m privileged to see these top class facility on a week to week basis and I’m sure the professionals will be just as impressed. It will be in pristine condition this summer.”

The source added, “Obviously to lose Rory McIlroy was a bit of a blow but that will be forgotten very quickly once this announcement is made. I believe many more top class players will be confirmed in the lead-up to the big week.”
