A twelve year old proposal to install at footbridge in Sixmilebridge is to be re-examined.

At the January meeting of the Shannon Municipal District, Fine Gael’s John Crowe asked “due to the large number of pedestrians using the bridge, I am looking for a feasibility study regarding a footbridge being erected over the O’Garney River for the safety of pedestrians and motorists alike”.

In response, senior executive engineer, Aidan O’Rourke noted the provision of a footbridge was progressed to planning stage in 2007. “This project was subsequently suspended pending other large-scale developments in Sixmilebridge. Although a source of funding for this project is not available at present, a re-examination of the proposal which was formulated in 2007 will take place”.

Cllr Crowe stated that the population of Sixmilebridge “has tripled” since the 2007 proposal. “Sixmilebridge is the main artery from East Clare to Shannon”. The shop owner revealed that a fisherman broke two legs at the location when his legs were caught by a passing truck. “People are trying to negotiate crossing there, something serious is going to happen”. He referred to the 537 students at Sixmilebridge N.S. and highlighted that several of them walked to school.

Cathaoirleach of the SMD, Cllr Gerry Flynn seconded the motion, “Sixmilebridge is one of the fastest growing places”, he commented.
