The Clare hurlers with young fan Pierce Shannon from Doolin

THOUSANDS of people have attended the opening weekend of the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival which got off a flying start, with the Senior Clare Hurlers launch at the Hydro Hotel.

Marcus White, Managing Director of White Tours and Hotels commented:  “The event was organised for the Clare Hurling Team to raise much needed funds for the provision of identified facilities, equipment and services for Clare hurling.”

“It was a great success and it was encouraging to see so many of the local community turn out to meet the team.”

The team met with fans, old and young at the hotel and signed Clare jerseys. One of those who met the team was Clare FM competition winner Julie Higgins.

“It was a lovely night and a real pleasure to meet the team. Getting the Clare Hurlers jersey signed was very special to me and my late father would have been very proud. He was a huge fan and would have travelled miles to get a good telegraph pole to listen to matches, when we were kids, such happy memories.”

Members of the team also attended the opening night of the County music events at the Marquee to see Declan Nerney and Gerry Guthrie.

“Club Clare, the Clare Senior Hurling management team and the players had a very successful and enjoyable night and are greatly appreciative of the management of the Hydro hotel for facilitating us.  We received wonderful hospitality and very generous support provided for the Clare hurling training fund in Lisdoonvarna on Friday night.” commented Donal Maloney, Gerry O’Connor from Clare Hurlers management team and Eugene Drennan from Club Clare.

Next weekend’s big Country Music events kick off with headliners Derek Ryan, Mike Denver and Cliona Hagan at the marquee, with music and dancing in venues all over the village.

Tickets for the Country Music events are available on www.ticketmaster.ie or can be purchased at the door.

The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival continues for the next month. For full schedule go to www.matchmakerireland.com
