Chicago River goes green for St Patrick's Day

ENNIS could be following in the footsteps of Chicago next year by turning the river Fergus green for St Patrickโ€™s Day.

Officials have been dying the Chicago River green annually since 1962.

Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard raised the possibility at Tuesdayโ€™s Ennis Municipal District meeting and council officials agreed to look into the possibility.

โ€œWe need to continue to up our game, to look at different ideas and novel ideas to keep Ennis and Clare out there in peopleโ€™s hearts and heads,โ€ Cllr Howard said.

Cllr Howard referred to buildings in Ennis going green for St Patrickโ€™s Day and the viral photos they produced.

She believes dying the River Fergus could have a similar effect and assures that environmentally safe dye would be used.

โ€œThese dyes are biodegradable, theyโ€™re not harmful to vegetation or to wildlife around the river,โ€ Cllr Howard added.
