SPEED cushions planned for Shannon’s Gort Road are moving closer to reality, with Clare County Council set to advertise traffic calming measures through the Section 38 process in the coming weeks.
The update was given at the September meeting of the Shannon Municipal District following a Notice of Motion from Cllr Tony Mulcahy (FG), who requested an update on speed cushions for the Gort Road.
In a written response, Caimin Dillon, A/Senior Executive Engineer with Shannon Municipal District, said: “Shannon Municipal District will be advertising for traffic calming at this location through the Section 38 process in the coming weeks and works will be subject to funding.”
Speed cushions are raised sections of road designed to slow smaller vehicles such as cars, while allowing wider vehicles including buses and emergency vehicles to pass more easily.
Unlike a full-width speed hump, they have gaps which allow larger vehicles to straddle the raised sections.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Mulcahy said the Section 38 process was going through and that he was “happy enough with it”.
The motion was formally seconded by Fianna Fail councillor David Griffin.
