NEWMARKET-ON-FERGUS native Paddy Meehan is celebrating a major golf achievement this week.
In winning the Woodstock captain’s (Pat Barry) prize at the weekend he completed a remarkable clean sweep of ‘majors’ at the club this season.
Paddy’s one stroke win over John O’Connor followed his victories in the lady captain’s prize to the men and the president’s prize.
A club stalwart who has been a club member since its foundation has represented the club at all levels over the years.
The twelve handicapper returned a score of 102 to win by one from John O’Connor (16) who, in turn, was one stroke ahead of Ross Darmody (4) with P.J. Carmody (13) in fourth place with 108. Sean Myatt (1) won the gross with 73 for 18 holes.
The category winners were John Mulcahy (6) with 109, Tommy Flynn (17) with 109 and Jack Duffy (19) with 110.
Other prize winners were Kieran Dromey (9) with 69 (past captain), Joe Green (12) with 69 (seniors), Tom Fitzpatrick (20) with 47 points (Junior boys) and Philip Brigdale, President Ennis Golf Club with 34 points (guests).
The captain’s prize to the ladies was an 18 hole stableford competition which was won by Eilis Neville (20) with 38 points from Niamh O’Regan (12) with 37 with third spot filled by Hannah O’Brien (25) with 36 points. The nines were won by Kathleen McEnery with 20 points and Mary McNamara with 17 points.
Winners in the 2’s competition in the captain’s prize were Joe Keane (6th & 11th), John Mulcahy (6th & 11th), Cormac Walsh and Sean Myatt (both at the 8th)
Catherine Lyons won the 9 hole stableford competition with 21 points from Colette Coakley with 18 points.
The ladies open day at Woodstock was won by Chaye Kelly (9) Aileen Beary (Ballykisteen), (19), Claire Ryan (Ballykisteen) (20) and Orla O’Donovan (Ballykisteen) (24) with 100 points.
They had two to spare over Deirdre O’Connor (New Forrest) (17) Ann O Loughlin (Ennis) (19), Marianne McGough (28), and Mary Howard (28) Woodstock.
In third place with 96 points were Mairead Bergin (Dromoland) (15), Mary Sadlier (Lahinch) (15), Sheila O’Grady (Kilrush) (20) and Aine Burke (32) Woodstock.
In the men’s section the winning team comprised Ollie McNamara (25), Michael O’Brien (20), John O’Donovan (21) and Liam McInerney (22). all Woodstock with 111 points. They were four ahead of another Woodstock team which included Kieran Dromey (9), Barry McNicholl (9), Jarlath Fahy (20) and Nick Germaine ( 24).
Nearest the pin at the 4th hole was Hannah O’Brien while nearest the pin at the 6th hole was Michael O’Brien.
This week’s senor men’s competition was won by Johnnie Clune, Tony Coote and Willie Thompson with 91 points.
The August Bank Holiday Monday Florida scramble was won by Ross Kenny, Ollie McNamara, Vinny McInerney and Eamon Fortune. The AMR open singles continues on this Thursday while the Brian Pyne Tiles August medal will be played for this weekend.
Kilrush Golf Club:
Captain Brian Scanlan’s prize was played for at Kilrush on Saturday when Donncadh Nagle emerged as the winner with 135. He had four to spare over Seamus O’Doherty with Ian Dillon, also with 139, in third place.
They were followed by John K Ryan with 140, Gearoid Williams with 140 and Patrick Coleman with 141. Tom Browne with 148 won the gross.
Category 1 was won by Malcolm McCarthy with 142, category 2 by Brendan Carey with 144 and category 3 by Sean Moran, also with 144.
The West Clare Dry Cleaners ladies 18 hole competition was won by Mary O’Neill (43) with 41 points.
Category 1 (0-20) was won by Mary Bolton (18) with 33 points from Fiona Kinsella (11) with 32 points.
Category 2 (21-30) was won by Joan O’Malley (25) with 38 points from Clare Pyne (26) with 34 points while category 3 (31 +) winner was Helen Hurst (48) with 35 points from Lucy Hayes (33) with 34 points.
Lahinch Golf Club:
Captain John Gleeson’s prize was played for at Lahinch over the Bank holiday weekend. Following the qualifying rounds on Friday and Saturday the leaders played off over 9 holes on Sunday.

Peter Cloonan with a total of 64 points emerged as the winner adding 21 points in the play off to the 43 he scored for 18 holes. He won by two from Noel Connellsan who was followed by Brian Day, also with 62.
They were followed by Arthur Hayden with 59, Lawrence Hickey with 58, Rory Nolan with 58, Paul Cagney with 57, Kieran Daly with 57, Kevin J. O’Keeffe with 57, Pat Burke with 56 and Michael O’Kelly with 56.
The presentation of prizes took place at the captain’s dinner in the clubhouse on Sunday night.

Ennis Golf Club:
Captain Noel Pilkington’s prize was played for at Ennis at the weekend when Senan Ryan emerged as the winner with 94. He had half a shot to spare over Michael Sullivan who had 94.5. They were followed by Noel Connellan with 96, Flan Lyons with 101, Tim Scanlan with 103 , Dean Lee with 103, Philip Brigdale with 104 and David McNicholas with 104.
Alan Butler won the gross with 73 from Ronan Herbert with 74. The category winners were Tom Saunders with 103.5, Padraic McNicholas with 99, John Nevin with 101.5 and Padraic Larkin with 99.
Other prize winners were Oliver O’Loughlin with 70 (past captain), David Boylan with 104.5 (seniors), Tony Lawlor (leading qualifier), Matthew Whelan (putting competition), Leo Herbert with 17 points (9 hole competition) and Tim Hurley (guest)
The captain’s prize to the ladies was an 18 hole singles strokeplay which was won by Claire Ruane (25) with 67 nett. She won by a stroke from Una O’Reilly (33) with third place filled by Mary Gardner (37) with 69.
Suzanne Deane (15) won the gross with 85 while the category winners were Patricia Moroney (18) with 71, Geraldine O’Rourke (30) with 69 and Mary Curley (49) with 70 nett.
In the 9 hole strokeplay Anne Casey (17) won with 30 nett from Therese Lillis (24) with 32 while Clare Pyne (14) won the gross with 49.The category winners were Della Burns (12) with 42, Mary Woulfe (17) with 37 and Marian Irwin (21) with 33.
Noel Pyne had a hole in one at the 7th while playing in the captain’s prize.
Last week’s senior men’s outing to Kilrush was won by Ger O’Brien Matt Flynn Joe O’Brien and Dave Boylan with 106 points. They had two to spare over Joseph O’Brien, Terry Hughes, Declan Hanley and Ollie Kennelly. In third place with 101 points were Richard O Connell, Peter Quinn, Paul Kenny and Michael Ball followed on 99 points by Pat G McInerney, Tim Scanlon, Michael Clancy and Pat Garry with fifth place filled by Noel Pyne, Martin Coffey, Ger O Brien and Michael Torpey with 98 points.
Last week’s senior ladies competition was won by Mary Kearns, Martina Corbett and Judith Brassil with 44 from Kathleen Pyne, Irene Jordan and Claire Pyne with 51 with third place filled by Mary Murray, Eileen Daly, Joan Tassie and Brid Cunninghsam with 52.
The 9 hole scramble was won by Eileen Corry, Mary McGrath and Mary McMahon.
The Eleanor Tive cup and Munster cup qualifier was played last week when Audrey McEnery (39) was the winner with 55.
Rose Enright (17) won division 1 with 36 points. Division 2 was won by Maureen Lynch (28) with 38 points while division 3 honours went to Breege Hamel (56) with 42 points.
The qualifiers who will represent Ennis in the Eleanor Tivy cup at West Waterford on August 26 are Audrey McEnery, Maureen Lynch and Anne Kelly.
Representing Ennis in the Munster cup at Adare Manor on September 4 will be Rose Enrighrt, Mary T. McMahon and Bridie Hanrahan.
The Golf Ireland silver medal winner is Ann A Gallery while the bronze medal winner is Mary Curley.
Last week’s 9 hole competition was won by Dympna Hehir (22) with 20 points from Jacinta Nicholas (17) who also had 20 points. Division honours were won by Mary Nagle (12) with 16 points, Mary Gardner (18) with 19 points and Marian Irwin (21) with 20 points.
The Friday open singles winner was Ian Myatt (9) with 41 points from Oscar Brigdale (23) from Woodstock with 39 points. In third place, also with 39 points was Sean Larkin (21)
The ladies Mary McKenna cup team bowed out at the semi-final stage last week when they went down to Cahir at Ennis.
Dromoland Golf Club:
The weekend’s competition at Dromoland was a foursomes stableford event in association with Cahercalla community Care. It was sponsored by the Anderson Foundaton.
The winners with 47 points were Edward King and Brian Sheedy and they won from Ruairi Price and Deirdre Cooney who had a similar score. In third place, a point back on 46, were Cathy Casey and Siobhan Dyar .
Noel Hoban with 21 points won the men’s 9 hole competition from Tony Cotgreace who also had 21 points. In third place on 20 points was Alfred Jones.
Last week’s senior men’s competition was won by John Casey and John McDermott from George O’Carroll and Kevin Kent with third place filled by Philip Heher and Joseph Demko.
The members mixed scramble was won by Jason Mulderrig, Pat Keogh and Colette Colleran from Ann Nix, Jimmy Neville and Willie Delaney with third place filled by Mary Arthur, Dermot O’ Neill and Pat Quinn.
Gort Golf Club:
Scratch cup competitions were the attraction at Gort over the Bank holiday weekend.
In the senior competition sponsored by Ward & Burke the winner was Gavin Lally (with 72 from Sean Myatt (3) 73 Woodstock while the nett was won by Joe Moran (3) with 71.
The Junior Scratch cup sponsored by Permanent TSB was won by Eanna Melville (7) with 73 from Chris Murphy (8) with 78 with third spot filled by Jack Losty (5) also with 78 (B9). Declan Reidy (8) with 72 Woodstock won the net.
In the Intermediate Scratch cup, sponsored by Gillanes, the winner was Matthew O’Halloran (12) with 75 from David Kennedy (10) with 79 with third place filled by John Moylan (10) also with 79. John
Melville (16) with 66 won the nett.
The minor scratch cup, sponsored by Hennelly’s, Gort was won by Alan Fogarty (18) with 84 from Michael Killeen (18) with 89 with Gerry Lally (17) in third place with 91. Ray Quinn (27) with 64 won the nett Friday’s open singles was won by Théo Gantley (16) with 38 points with the gross won by Joe Moran (1) with 32 points.
The ladies 18 hole singles stableford sponsored by Kilcolgan Castle saw Petra O Connor (13) with 37 points win category 1. In category 2 the winner was Teresa Helebert (29) with 47 points while category 3 was won by Brid Horan (36) with 33 points.
Friday’s 18 hole singles was won by Maura Hanrahan (14) with 43 points from Carmel McGeady (36) with 38 points.
The 9 hole stableford competition was won by Mary Cunningham (28) with 22 points from Teresa Brennan (26) with a similar score.
Shannon Golf Club:
A semi-open 2 step modified scramble was held by the ladies section at Shannon on Tuesday when the winners were Marlyn Kelly (29) Debbie Reddan (11) and Lisa O’Neill (32) with 74 points.
They won by one from Margaret Hope (15) Honor Kinahan (24) and Margaret Ryan (30) with third place filled by Madge Young (12) Niamh O’Regan (9) and Mary T Real (5) with 70 points.
Máire McMahon (15)with 21 points won the July 9 hole stableford competition from Ailish Sheehan (22) who also had 21 points.
Next week’s competition is the August medal while the next presentation of prizes takes place on Tuesday August 11 at 8pm.
The Development classic take place on Friday and Saturday.
