ST JOHN’s NATIONAL School in Cratloe took top honours at the Cork Choral Festival.
High notes were hit in Cratloe following the announcement it won the prestigious Irish Federation of Musicians Trophy for their performance of Iníon a Phalaitínigh in the national competition for schools at the Cork Choral Festival.
Both primary and post-primary schools were in the competition. The song is based on the story of the Palatines who came to Ireland in 1709 from Germany. They settled in Rathkeale, Ardpatrick and Ballyseedy among other places.
PW Joyce from Glenosheen in his book Ancient Irish Music was interested in this song because of the Palatine connection between Ballyseedy and Glenosheen, his native place.
Fifty boys and girls from fourth, fifth and sixth classes in St John’s NS form the Cratloe school choir which is under the musical direction of Mrs. Bernadette Kennedy and Ms. Gabrielle Lee-Casey.
