JUST short of one hundred teams played in the team of four classic at Woodstock last week in aid of the Haematology Oncology Day Unit.
The competition was organised in memory of Carmel Russell McGann and Ena Higgins.
In the men’s section the winners were Cathal Nagle, John Dempsey Eugene Killeen and Donnacha Dunne with 109 points and they were one ahead of Mike, Oisin and Cathal Kelly and John O’Connor with 108 points. In third place with 106 points were Kevin, Frankie and Diarmuid Toner and Pat Barry followed by Liam, Martin, Brendan and Mark McInerney (East Clare) with 102 points.
In fifth place, also with 102 points were Sam Doyle, Cyril Corry, Anthony Linnane and TJ Scanlan (all Ennis) with sixth place filled by Paul and Tony Coote, Robbie and Jason Dormer, also with 102 points.
The winners in the ladies section were Eilis Neville, Hannah O’Brien, Ramona Gleeson and Mary Mc Namara with 95 points and they were two ahead of Cora O’Toole, Dorethea Madden, Deirdre Cooney and Dolores Fox (all Dromoland) with 93 points.
In third place, also with 93 points were Marianne McGough, Claire Ruane (Ennis), Shauna Moylaan and Susie Meehan (Shannon) with fourth place filled by the all Ennis team of Joan Murphy, Attracta William, Una and Patricia O’Reilly with 90 points.
The men’s long drive on the 16th was won by Diarmuid Toner while nearest the pin on 14th was won by Oisin Kelly.
The ladies long drive on 10th was won by Fiona Kinsella. Kilrush and nearest the pin on the 11th hole was won by Joan Murphy, Ennis
The Russell, McGann and Higgins families thanked all for their support.
Dromoland Golf Club:
Dromoland’s play in pink day in aid of the national breast cancer research institute was held last week. The 18 hole team event was won by Lisa Quinn, Michelle McCarthy, Louise Guilfoyle (all Dromoland) and Susie Meehan (Shannon) with 94 points and they won on a countback from Dorothea Madden (Dromoland) Elaine Morris (Limerick), Brid Gurnett (East Clare) and Ann Gallery (Ennis).
In third place with 92 points were Annette Collins, Eimear Danaher, Justine McCarthy (all Dromoland) and Mary O’Donoghue (Adare). They were followed by Colette Maguire, Breda O’Donovan (both Dromoland), Jan Kloos and Mary O’Connor (both Adare Manor) with 91 points. In fifth place with 89 points were Catherine Kavanagh and Deirdre Mullins (both Mitchelstown GC) Niamh Clohessy and Susan O’Sullivan (both Monkstown GC).
Ann Gallery (Ennis GC) won the long drive while Susan Gilmore (Ballybunion GC) was nearest the pin
The ladies 9 hole play in pink competition was won by Colette Colleran with 22 points from Aislinn Keogh with a similar score.
Winner of the men’s 9 hole competition was Billy O’Mahony with 20 points and he was one ahead of Matthew Cooney.
The ladies Galway Crystal competition was won by Liz Skehan with 41 points from Louise Guilfoyle with 35 with Dorothy Brennan in third place, also with 35 followed by Siobhan Dyar with 34 points. Mairéad Bergin won the gross while the nines were won by Leslie O’Flynn and Deirdre Cooney, each with 19 points. Leslie O’Flynn had the longest drive while Dorothy Brennan was nearest the pin
In the 9 hole competition Geraldine Ryan was the winner with 19 points. The weekly 9 hole competition was won by Sinéad Burke Keogh.
The weekend’s 18 hole stableford competition for men was won by Shane O’Brien with 42 points from Noel O’Connor with 38 with third place filled by Diarmuid O’Connor, also with 38 points. Darren Malone with 36 points won the category for players with handicaps of 20 and over while the gross was won by Ross Kenny with 33 points.
The 9 hole competition was won by Brendan Lennon with twenty points from Alan O’Flanagan with a similar score with Con Ryan in third place with 18 points.
Woodstock Golf Club:
The captain’s fourball betterball at Woodstock at the weekend was won by Tommy Flynn (16) and John McGrath (11) with 47 points and they had two to spare over Ross Darmody (2) and Colm O’Callghan (9).
Winners in the 2’s competition were Michael.Coughlan (6th), Evan Green (8th), Brian Keogh (14th) and Barry McNamara (14th).
The competition this weekend will be the AMR open singles. Each weekly winner will be invited back at the end of August to play for the grand prize.
The Ozone Health & Fitness May medal will be played for off the white tees.
Meanwhile the Junior foursomes boys team defeated Shannon in Woodstock in difficult weather conditions on Sunday but there was disappointment for the mixed foursomes team who lost out to East Clare on the same day when weather conditions were also very difficult.
The club’s J.B. Carr team will take on Shannon in Shannon in the first leg of their Clare final contest on this Friday afternoon at 4pm, the return leg will be at Woodstock on Wednesday next at 2pm.
Kilrush Golf Club:
The Clare Oil sponsored open singles at Kilrush was won by Bill O Reilly (15) with 40 points with second place filled by Brian Scanlan (12) with 38 points. In third place with 37 points was John Clancy (15) while the gross was won by Ruari Young.
The category winners were Terry O’Hare (10) with 33 points, Pascal Looney (13) with 33 points and Finbar McMahon (22) with 34 points while the nines were won by Michael Shannon Snr and Ian Dillon.
The Malone’s Total health 18 hole open was won by Mary O’Neill (44) with 39 points while the category winners were Mary Lyons (17) with 35 points, Miriam Saunders (24) with 34 points and Ursula Lineen (31) with 33 points.
Ennis Golf Club:
The winners of the men’s Holmpatrick qualifier at Ennis were Michael Clancy (25) and Mark O’Brien (17) with 45 points.
The senior ladies scramble was won by Clare Pyne, Eileen Daly and Mary Glynn with 43.07 from Therese Lillis, Brid Cunnigham, Marie Dillen and Joan Tassie with 47.49 with third place filled by Mary Murray, Jean Moloney and Una O’Reilly with 48.14.
The weekly ladies stableford competition was won by Marina Varden (51) with 42 points from Maureen Lynch (33) with 35 points.
The division winners were Flor Coffey (21) with 35 points, Patricia O’Reilly (33) with 35 points and Marie Connolly (48) with 33 points.
The overall winner in the ladies 8 hole competition was Claire Ruane (12) with 16 points while the category winners were Carmel Verling (12) with 13 points, Mary Woulfe (17) with 15 points and Claire Kennelly (22) with 13 points.
Last week’s senior men’s comprtition was won by Noel Pyne, Martin Coffey, Brian Tuohy and Pat Rutherford with 76 points and they won on a countback from Andrew McGloin, Jim Farrell, Liam McCannon and Jim Sheridan. In third place with 75 points were Ger O’Brien, Ger Hanrahan, Tom Fox and Frank Cullinan followed by Richard O’Connell, Seamus Bowe, Damon Murphy and Larry Parks with 68 points. In fifth place, also with 68 points were Pat G McInerney, Michael Cummins, Fintan McEvoy and Paul Kenny followed by Flan Downes, John Lillis, Matt Flynn and Jim Hennessy with 67 points. In seventh place with 65 points were Tony McInerney, Kieran Patton, Michael Ball and Jimmy Kearns followed by Brendan Pyne, Paul Mockler, Tim Kelly and Tommy Heath with 64 points.
The Martin Ward sponsored Friday open singles was won by Kieran Ryan (24) with 39 points. In second place with 36 points was Robert Cantwell (6) (Woodstock) with third place filled by Graham Wilkins (17) with 35 points
Ennis lost to Shannon in the first round of the ladies intermediate foursomes on Sunday in Shannon on a score of 3 matches to 1.
Shannon Golf Club:
Dean (4) and Pat McKenna (11) won the men’s fourball competition at Shannon with 46 points. Harry Grew (7) was the 9 hole winner with 17 points.
In the men’s green tees challenge the winner was Rory Hennessy (7) with 38 points from Daithi Lohan (5) with 37 points. In third place with 36 points was Gary Fitzgibbon (9) with 36 points followed by Adam O’Connor (17), also with 36 points. Damian Casey (+1) won the gross with 37 points.
Wednesday’s men’s open singles was won by Wayne Regan (13) with 37 points from Thomas J. McMahon (14) with 35 points with third spot filled by Tommy Lynch (12), also with 35 points.
This week’s ladies competition at Shannon was won by Noeleen Neylon (9) with 71 nett. She was two ahead of Suzanne Mc Mahon (19) with third place filled by Ettie Gallery (18) also with 73.. Michelle Pyke (7) won the gross with 80.
East Clare Golf Club:
Sunday’s ladies 18 hole stableford competition at East Clare was won by
Deirdre Tuohy (37) with 37 points. Joan Crotty (45) was second with 35 points followed by Brid Gurnett (37) with 32 points.
Winners of the ladies Wednesday competition were Marie A. Kelly, Kay Grimes, Mary Stritch and Mary Hogan from Phil Burke, Breda O’Loghlin, Siobhan Mulcahy and Mary Jo Minogue.
The senior men’s competition was won by Kieran McNamara, John Nihill and Nick Ryan from Brendan Moloney, Mike Noonan and Willie Roche with third place filled by Jim Bradley, Jim Willis and Noel Earley.
The mixed scramble on Friday was won by Pat McNamara, Carmel Dillon, Mary Farrell and Breda O’ Loghlin from Mary Jo Minogue, Dominic Stuart and Brendan Moloney with third place filled by Chris Davis, Margaret MacNamara and Deirdre Tuohy.
Gort Golf Club:
Friday’s open 18 hole singles stableford at Gort saw Damien Burke (12) win category 1 with 40 points. Category 2 was won by Jason Gallagher (17) with 38 points and category 3 by Diarmuid Tobin (23) with 36 points. Gavin Lally (-2) won the gross with 37 points.
The weekend’s 18 hole fourball stableford was won by Matthew (14) and Adam O Halloran (26) with 50 points from Martin Flaherty (13) and Michael T Ryan (17)with 47 points. The gross was won by Gavin Lally (+1) and Joe Moran (0) with 41 points.
Sixmilebridge Golf Society:
Woodstock was the venue for the second outing of the season for Sixmilebridge Golf Society on Saturday last when Dave Watson emerged as the winner. He was followed by Eric Purcell with Pa Mulready in third place and John Moloney in fourth spot. Ian Mulready and Adam Merriman won the nines while the par 3 winner was John Collins.
The next outing is for Colin Murphy’s captain’s prize and this will take place at Nenagh on June 6th.
Kildysart Golf Society:
Members of Kildysart golf society made the trip to Esker Hills golf course in Offaly on Sunday.
The winner on the day was Mark Cottam who also won the nearest the pin prize. In second place was Josh Bravender followed by Tony McMahon with Bryan Hayes in fourth spot.
Paudie Hickey won the guests section with 35 points from Ben Ryan with 31 points. John Clancy won the longest drive while the nines were won by Sean Finnucane with 16 points and Ken Breen with 14 points. The society’s next outing will be on June 28 to Portumna.
