SHANE LOWRY will be heading to Doonbeg this September to tee off in the Amgen Irish Open.
Lowry made history when he won his national open on his debut appearance as an amateur in 2009.
He will make his eighteenth consecutive appearance when the tournament arrives at Trump International Golf Links Ireland, Doonbeg, for the first time.
Held at County Louth Golf Club in Baltray, the 2009 success for Lowry marked the first instance where an amateur won The Irish Open. He remains the most recent player to win on the DP World Tour before turning professional. Ten years later, he became a Major Champion, claiming the Claret Jug after winning The 148th Open at Royal Portrush.
Now seeking a seventh DP World Tour title, Shane will be one of the headline acts in Doonbeg and joins European teammate, defending Amgen Irish Open champion and reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy.
Last September, the thirty nine year old delivered one of the most memorable moments in recent Ryder Cup history when his putt on the final green at Bethpage Black secured the crucial half-point that retained the trophy for Europe.
There will be a fantastic field in Doonbeg this year, Shane said. “Playing in front of home fans at your national open is always incredibly special. It’s a tournament I love, one I grew up watching, and to have my name on the trophy means a great deal. There’s no better feeling than playing on home soil and I’m really excited for the Amgen Irish Open.
“Winning it again is always a goal. It’s going to be a fantastic field this year at Doonbeg and the partnership with Amgen has really helped elevate the tournament, and it’s great to see how much it means to fans in Ireland and how it continues to grow. I’ve had some strong performances in the event over the last few years and would love nothing more than to get my hands on that trophy again,” he added.
General admission tickets for the Saturday are the only weekend tickets left for the Irish Open in Doonbeg. All Sunday General Admission, all Premium Experiences and all Ticket+ packages have sold out already.
The Amgen Irish Open once again assumes a key position on the DP World Tour’s Global Schedule as part of the ‘Back 9’, which encompasses nine of the Tour’s most historic tournaments and national opens.
Lowry is part of an esteemed roll of honour to have won Ireland’s national open, which also includes Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Pádraig Harrington, Bernhard Langer, McIlroy, Colin Montgomerie, José María Olazábal, Jon Rahm, and Sam Torrance.
Fans are encouraged to secure tickets early to avoid disappointment, with
Lowry and McIlroy will headline the on-course action during the week, while off the course, five-piece Irish rock and pop band Keywest will take centre stage after play on Saturday in the Championship Village.
