KILRUSH’s Colm Fitzgerald landed a treble victory on the Connacht derby opening night.

Friday night’s Galway card was dominated by the opening round heats of the Kilcolgan Castle Connacht Derby over 550 yards generously sponsored by Karen Geoghegan of The Kilcolgan Castle which carries a winners cheque of €9000.
There was no doubting the training performance of the night which belonged to Kilrush handler Colm Fitzgerald who landed a treble on the night following the successes of Flyers Minnie and Tiermana Hunter in the opening two heats which were supplemented by the victory of Hallywell Raptor in the opening A6 graded contest.
In the opening heat of the Kilcolgan Castle Connacht Derby Island Bobby was away best in the centre if the track and racing towards the opening bend he led narrowly from Flyers Minnie with Hollywell Merlin in third place as they reached the opening bend. Turning down the back the Colm Fitzgerald trained Flyers Minnie took over at the head of affairs from Hollywell Merlin with Island Bobby back in third just ahead of the improving Droopys Map. Exiting the back straight Flyers Minnie still held the call just from Hollywell Merlin but off the home bend the Zero-Zero Syndicate owned Flyers Minnie (Ballyhimikin Jet & Liosgarbh Lila) began to assert as she stayed on well to defeat Island Bobby and Droopys Map by a length and a half and a length in 30.66.

In the second heat Lakeside Albert trapped well on the wide outside and on the long run towards the opening bend he led from Tiermana Hunter with Unamimous Leo in third place along the inner as they reached the opening bend. Rounding the bend Tiermana Hunter tracked really well to take over in front and racing towards halfway Tiermana Hunter led by three lengths as Unanimous Leo moved into a closing second place. Out front though the Supping Away Syndicate owned Tiermana Hunter again rallied superbly out of the back straight and this would prove vital as the son of Ballyhimikin Jet and Tiermana Jetty dug deep close home to defeat Unanimous Leo and Lakeside Albert by a neck and three lengths to complete a quick double for trainer Fitzgerald in 30.79.
Racing opened with an A6 graded contest on which Balroebuck Ash out wide was best away and she led on the run towards the opening bend from Breaghmore Joeys with the remaining runners all within two lengths of the lead as they negotiated the turn. Racing into the back straight Breaghmore Joeys and Balroebuck Ash were split by the improving Hollywell Raptor and approaching the end of the back straight the Colm Fitzgerald trained Hollywell Raptor (Kinloch Brae & Hollywell Samba) struck the front. Quickly asserting the Stone-Madd-Two Syndicate owned Hollywell Raptor went clear to defeat the staying on Annadown Sophie by a length and a half in 29.53.

The A3 graded eighth contest over 525 yards was the feature on Saturday night’s card at Galway Greyhound Stadium and after an encouraging return last week the Mullins-Curtin Syndicate of Gort owned Stick With Me was well supported to improve two places on his third place return and he certainly did not let those supporters down.

As the traps rose Cloneyogan Sydny trapped well on the inner and although moving towards the centre of the track on the run up he’d from Stick With Me at the turn. Rounding the bend though Stick With Me ran right round the outside to take command of proceedings entering the back straight. Three lengths clear passing the halfway mark the son of Grangeview Ten and Dana Point had his rivals strung out behind him as he exited the back straight and in his way to an emphatic seven and a half length success over Hanover Mellie in a best of the night 28.78

The chief supporting contest was the A3 graded seventh in which Brickhill Como began best and led towards the opening bend from Grangeview Scoob and Substance out wide. Rounding the bend there was some bunching among the leaders and this resulted in the striped jacketed Substance running right round her rivals to take over in front chased by Hanover Luna down the back straight. Racing past the halfway point the Michael J, Malone of Liscannor owned Substance led by over length from Hanover Luna and although the lead increased to over two lengths leaving the back straight Substance (Slippery Robert-Be Slow Teresa) was all out close home tom hold the renewed effort of Hanover Luna by half a length in 29.75.

All five runners (Trap 1 Vacant) were away in terms for the S4 graded sprint contest with the striped jacketed Highview Exotic showing the best early form to lead out wide as Notsobadnow went up well towards the inner. At the opening bend the leader moved inwards a manoeuvre that halted the progress of the chalenging Notsobadnow. Off the home bend Highview Exotic led by a length but down the inside the Going Well Now Syndicate owned Notsobadnow (Ballyhimikin Jet & Raha Gogo) was now in the clear and the Declan McDonagh of Liscannor trained runner got up on the line to short head his rival in 19.42.
Down Limerick way Snuggie Dash recorded his fifth career win for Newmarket-on-Fergus’ Myles Cummins and Breda Casey, a homebred son of Jacob Tashadelek and Miles Girl his winning time was 29.22.

On the coursing front, at an excellent ran Tipperary & District meeting last weekend, there was success for Cooraclare’s Liam & Noreen Liddy as Mr Tiger took the feature event, the Champion Puppy Stake & React Perpetual Cup. This son of Blades of Fire and Bodens Wonder who previously won the Derby Trial Stake on the opening day of this year’s season at Liscannor showed his class throughout to claim the winner’s purse of €1850.

Next weekend it will be all systems go for the Irish Cup meeting at Patrickswell, which will commence on Friday next 27th February.
