ENNIS’ Tommy Meskill has been announced as the new co-presenter of the Six One News on RTÉ.
David McCullagh’s move from Six One to helm a new morning show on RTÉ Radio One opened up the vacancy which bosses at the State broadcaster have opted to fill with Clare’s own Tommy. He will join Sharon Tobin as co-presenter later this month.
Other changes announced by RTÉ include confirmation that Sarah McInerney and Justin McCarthy are new co-presenters on Morning Ireland with Paul Cunningham leaving his post as political correspondent to front ‘This Week’ on RTÉ Radio One.
Since last July, Tommy has served as London correspondent with RTÉ. Prior to this, he had worked as part of their political team reporting from Leinster House and the European Parliament. He has previously presented RTÉ Radio 1’s This Week and RTÉ One’s European Parliament Report.
Tommy joined the newsroom in RTÉ in 2016, working across several different programmes in the past decade. His first big role was as presenter of news2day in September 2016.
A past pupil of Barefield NS and Rice College, Tommy completed a degree in Communication Studies at Dublin City University (DCU). After graduating from DCU, Tommy worked as a newsreader with Spirit Radio, East Coast FM and then became a reporter at Dublin station FM104. In 2021, Tommy was the virtual grand marshal for the Ennis St Patrick’s Day parade.
Of his new post, Tommy said it is a huge honour and pointed out the programme plays “a crucial role in shaping the news agenda in Ireland”. He stated, “Its strength depends on the work of almost the entire newsroom, which is why it’s such a cherished part of what we do. I’m really looking forward to getting started and being part of a programme that continues to bring accurate, engaging and trusted news to our audience”.
