PEDESTRIAN MEASURES in O’Connell Street in the heart of Ennis will end on Sunday.

Clare County Council have confirmed that the temporary measures will no longer be in place from 4:30pm on Sunday (October 22nd).

A spokesperson for the local authority outlined, “This is in line with the road closure notice advertised in February 2023. As outlined in this notice, these measures were intended to be in place until 7th January, 2024, or until the O’Connell Street Public Realm works commenced, whichever date would fall first”.

Such works were intended to commence last year but were delayed in a wait for final approval from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

Temporary pedestrianisation was introduced in Ennis Town Centre from March 2020 to September 2021 to enable social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following a pedestrianisation survey in October 2021, the Ennis MD advertised a temporary road closure to run from April 8th 2022 to March 19th 2023.

Folllowing the expiry of the previous road closure in March, a new road closure was introduced to run until January 7th 2024 or if works commenced prior to this date.

€12,000 has been spent by the local authority installing signage at 34 locations on approach roads to the town centre advising motorists of the revised traffic and pedestrianisation arrangements.
