CONTROL OF DOGS is causing concern within Shannon Town.

Gardaí at Shannon Garda Station are appealing to the public to ensure they have adequate control of their dog when out walking.

Crime prevention officer in the Clare Garda Division, Triona Brooks explained that a woman contacted Shannon Garda Station this week where she voiced her concern about “the number of people in the area who are out walking their dogs off the lead and these dogs are running up to her and she is in fear for her own safety as the owners do not appear to have control over their dogs and she was quite distressed by this”.

Sergeant Brooks added, “We want to remind dog owners that they are obliged by law to have effective control of their dogs when out walking. The owner of a dog is liable in damages for damage caused in an attack on any person by the dog and for injury done by it to any livestock. The owner is liable if the injury occurred because the dog owner was unreasonably careless in controlling the dog”.

Meanwhile, Gardaí are also reminding the public to be mindful of accommodation fraud. Gardaí in the county received another report this week from a lady “who paid a substantial sum of money to a Spanish bank account on the presumption that this was a deposit for renting a house in Co. Tipperary but unfortunately no address matches the one given on the advertisement”.

Offering advice to the public, Sergeant Brooks stated, “Don’t be tricked into paying a deposit for a property that does not exist or has already been rented, often to multiple people. Do your homework, look at the average rent price in the area and if the rent is unusually low and it seems too good to be true it usually is. Use online maps to double check that the property being advertised actually exists and is at the stated address. Keep copies of all correspondence between yourself and the advertiser, including bank details and the advertisement itself. Use legitimate well-known rental agencies where possible. Don’t hand over any money until you have seen the property and are happy with its condition. Once satisfied use a cheque or bank draft to pay the deposit”.
