BUNRATTY IS THE LOCATION where the most speeding fines are incurred within Co Clare, new figures show.
A total of €65,120 in speeding fines were collected in Bunratty last year. The drop in the speed limit from 120km/h to 100km/h along the M18 and N18 has seen plenty of visitors caught in the tourist village which is located within the parish of Newmarket-on-Fergus.
Indeed the section at Clonmoney West in Newmarket-on-Fergus ranked twentieth in the country for the highest amount of incidences that drivers were detected going over the speed limit.
Nationally, more than €8m in speeding fines were collected across almost 400 locations last year. A quarter of the fines dished out were from thirteen locations dotted all over Ireland.
From fines of Co Clare drivers, a total of €53,760 was levied which is lower than the Bunratty figure as the route is traversed by motorists from multiple different counties on a daily basis.
Data was released following a parliamentary question by Kildare North TD, Catherine Murphy (SD).
Acting Minister for Justice, Simon Harris (FG) said the receipts generated from the fines are used to fund the operation of the system of speed vans. GoSafe have the safety camera contract but have no role in the collection of fines, the company is paid for hours of monitoring “with the number of detections having no bearing on the payment it receives,” the Minister said.
