LIGHTING IMPROVEMENTS in Barefield are estimated to cost €11,000 for a 200m stretch of road.

An appeal for the Ennis Municipal District to install public lighting from Hassett’s Lounge Bar and Considine’s Pub down to Barefield National School was made by Cllr Pat Daly (FF) at a recent meeting.

Existing public lighting is in place “at and around the school and the junction where the two pubs are located,” acting senior executive engineer Ian Chaplin stated. He confirmed that an assessment had been completed along with a quotation for the installation of lighting.

According to Chaplin, the cost of supplying and installing five ten metre columns and 54w LED fittings complete with ancillary equipment and wiring would be in the region of €7,000. Extra costs flagged included civil works (€3,000) and ESB connection costs (€1,000).

He added, “there are a few trees that would need to be cut back that are interfering with the location where the lights would be installed, this work can be carried out by the MD. Overall cost for installation would be €11,000. If a budget can be provided for this work, Ennis MD will arrange for the work to proceed.

Cllr Daly outlined that residents in the village asked him to raise the matter. “It is a very dark 200m but anything over €11,000 is very expensive”.

Mayor of the Ennis Municipal District, Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) stated, “it is very important improvement, it doesn’t seem an inordinate expense, we can work together to make it happen”.
